About pH Meters, EC Meters & Grow Room Testers
Measuring is the cheapest way to avoid problems. Knowing the pH and strength of your nutrient solution, and the temperature and humidity in your tent, means you can fix issues before plants show them. We stock trusted Bluelab meters and a simple hygrometer for everyday checks.
How to choose a meter
pH: the key to nutrient uptake. Plants can only take up all the minerals they need when the pH of the solution is right. The Bluelab pH Pen (£100) is a compact handheld pen that also measures solution temperature. Bluelab recommends a solution temperature of 18-22°C for root health. As a general rule of thumb, hydro and coco growers usually aim for a pH of around 5.5-6.5, and soil growers around 6.0-7.0. Always follow your nutrient manufacturer's guidance.
EC/CF: how strong is the feed? If conductivity is too low, plants may not get enough nutrients. Too high and they can dehydrate. The Bluelab CF Truncheon Nutrient Meter (£80) is the quickest way to check. Dip the probe in the solution and read the flashing lights. It needs no calibration.
Temperature and humidity. The Garden King Hygrometer with Probe (£10) shows temperature and humidity, and its external probe takes readings at canopy level, where it matters.
Most growers start with a pH pen and an EC/CF meter, used together every time they mix a feed, plus a hygrometer left in the tent.

Meter FAQs
Do I need both a pH meter and an EC meter?
They measure different things. EC tells you how much feed is in the water and pH tells you whether plants can use it. Most growers check both.
Does the Bluelab Truncheon need calibrating?
No. Bluelab states that the Truncheon does not require calibration.
Where should I put the hygrometer probe?
At canopy height, out of direct light. That gives you the conditions your plants actually experience.
