LED grow light buying guide
What size LED grow light do I need?
Start with your tent's footprint, not the wattage on the box. As a rule of thumb for a full grow cycle:
| Tent size | Typical LED | Lights in our range |
|---|---|---|
| 0.6m x 0.6m | 100W to 200W | Omega Infinity Pro 200W |
| 0.8m x 0.8m | 200W to 360W | Omega Infinity Pro 300W, Maxibright Daylight 300W, Maxibright Varidrive 360W |
| 1.0m x 1.0m | 360W to 480W, or a dimmed 720W | Varidrive 360W, or a 720W bar light run lower |
| 1.2m x 1.2m | 600W to 720W | Omega Black 720W, Omega 720W Plus, Photon 720W, LUMii XLED 720W, Gorilla GEN-III 720W, Varidrive 3.0 720W, Maxibright Daylight 660W |
| 1.5m x 1.5m | 720W to 1000W | Varidrive 2 720/960W, Elite 500W/1000W Split, Varidrive 500W/1000W Split |
Always check the coverage on each product page before you buy, and leave room in the tent to raise and lower the light. For the full explanation, read our guide to LED vs HPS grow lights and our grow tent size guide.
Types of LED grow light
Bar lights (720W class). Several bars spread across the canopy give even light over a 1.2m tent. This is the most popular choice in our shop and it is what our grow tent kits are built around.
Split LEDs (500W/1000W). Two panels you can run at 500W or 1000W. Good for a 1.5m tent, or for growers who want to start low and turn up as plants fill out.
Compact panels (200W to 360W). For 0.6m to 1.0m tents, cupboards and small spaces.
Under canopy LEDs. The Omega 120W, Elite 150W, Faven R8 120W and MaxiLED PRO TS sit under the main light to reach lower leaves and fruit on tall plants.
Propagation lights. The Maxibright T5 LED is gentle enough for seedlings and cuttings and cheap to run. See our full propagation range.
What to look at besides watts
- PPF and efficacy. PPF is how much usable light the fitting puts out. Efficacy (µmol/J) is how much light you get per watt of electricity. A higher efficacy light costs less to run for the same result.
- Dimming. A dimmable driver lets you run gently over young plants and turn up later, and lets one light work in two tent sizes.
- Driver position. A built-in driver is tidier. A remote driver can sit outside the tent so less heat stays inside.
- Heat. LEDs run much cooler than HPS. Great in summer, but in winter you may need a little extra heat. See our heating and climate range.
A light works best with the right extraction. Match it with a fan and filter from our carbon filters and fans and filters ranges.
LED grow light FAQs
What is the best LED grow light for a 1.2m tent?
A 600W to 720W bar light. The Omega Black 720W and Omega 720W Plus are popular in the shop, and the Photon 720W is the budget pick. Both suit a 1.2m x 1.2m tent for the whole grow.
Can I use one LED from seedling to harvest?
Yes. Every main light in this range is full spectrum and suits the whole cycle. Run it dimmed or higher up over young plants, then bring it down and turn it up as they grow.
How high should an LED grow light hang?
It depends on the light and the stage of growth, so follow the maker's guide on the product page. If leaves bleach or curl up at the edges, raise or dim the light. If plants stretch with long gaps between leaves, lower it or turn it up.
Is a 720W LED the same as a 600W HPS?
Not exactly, because they work differently. A good 720W LED will usually match or beat a 600W HPS in a 1.2m tent while using less electricity and giving off less heat.
Are LED grow lights cheaper to run?
Yes. Modern LEDs turn more of their electricity into usable light than HPS, so you need fewer watts for the same area and less extraction to remove the heat.
Can I buy a light with a tent and fan included?
Yes. Our grow tent kits pair a 1.2m tent with a 720W or 660W LED, and the full kits add extraction, pots and media for less than buying the parts separately.
