The Most Common Indoor Plant Pests

Spider mites are the number one enemy of indoor growers. They thrive in warm, dry conditions and reproduce extremely quickly. Look for tiny yellow spots on leaves (stippling) and fine webbing between stems and leaves. Act immediately, as spider mite populations can double every few days under ideal conditions.

Fungus gnats are small black flies that lay eggs in the top layer of damp growing medium. The larvae feed on fine root hairs, reducing plant health and opening routes to root disease. Sticky traps help monitor numbers, while drench treatments tackle larvae in the root zone.

Thrips are tiny, fast-moving insects that feed on leaf tissue, leaving silver streaks and distorted growth. They can be tricky to spot early, so hold leaves up to the light and look for tiny movement.

Insecticide Sprays for Indoor Plants

A quality insecticide spray for plants is your first line of defence. Pyrethrin-based sprays are fast-acting and effective against most common soft-bodied insects. Oil sprays act as both a contact insecticide and a preventative deterrent. For more persistent infestations, systemic insecticides can be applied to the root zone and are taken up throughout the plant.

Always apply sprays in the last few hours of your lights-on period (or switch lights off first) to prevent leaf burn. Repeat applications are usually needed, so always follow the manufacturer's guidance on the interval between treatments.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Good environmental management is the best pest prevention. Maintain healthy humidity levels (40 to 60%), avoid overwatering, keep your grow space clean between cycles, and quarantine any new plants before introducing them to your grow room. A regular five-day inspection routine, checking both the tops and undersides of leaves, catches problems early.
