How Do Carbon Filters Work?

Carbon filters work through a process called adsorption. As warm, odour-laden air is drawn through the filter by your extractor fan, it passes through a deep bed of activated carbon, a highly porous material with an enormous surface area. The tiny pores in the carbon trap odour molecules and VOCs (volatile organic compounds), leaving clean, fresh air to exit through your ducting.

The key specs to look at are bed depth and carbon quality. A deeper carbon bed means longer contact time between the air and the carbon, which means more thorough odour removal. Premium filters use coarser, high-grade carbon that maintains superior airflow while doing an exceptional job of removing smell.

Matching Your Carbon Filter to Your Fan

The most important thing when buying a carbon filter is making sure it matches your extractor fan's diameter and airflow rating. A mismatched setup, either undersized or oversized, will reduce performance and shorten filter life.

As a general rule, match the flange diameter of your filter to that of your fan (100mm, 125mm, 150mm, 200mm, etc.). The filter's rated airflow (m³/hr) should equal or exceed your fan's output. If in doubt, slightly oversizing the filter is better than undersizing, as a bigger bed depth gives more headroom.

Maintaining Your Carbon Filter

Carbon filters perform best when humidity is kept between 40–60%. High humidity reduces the carbon's adsorptive capacity and significantly shortens its life. Most filters come with a pre-filter sleeve, so wash this regularly to keep airflow unrestricted. With good conditions, a quality carbon filter should last 12–24 months before needing replacement.
