About Growing Media
Hydroponic Growing Media
Growing media is the foundation of any indoor grow. It's the environment your roots live in and it shapes how you feed, water and manage your plants throughout their life cycle. The right hydroponic growing media can make a significant difference to root health, feeding consistency and overall yield, while the wrong choice can create problems that are difficult to resolve mid-grow. At Black Country Systems we stock the full range of indoor growing media, including coco coir, clay pebbles, soil mixes, perlite and rockwool, from brands trusted by growers across the UK including Canna, Plagron, BioBizz and Gold Label.

Coco Coir Growing Media
Coco coir (or coco fibre) is made from the husks of coconuts and is one of the most popular hydroponic growing media for indoor cultivation. It's pH-neutral, retains moisture well while draining freely, and gives roots plenty of oxygen. Coco is ideal for growers who want the control and speed of hydroponics with the forgiving nature of a physical medium. We stock coco from Canna, Plagron and Gold Label, in loose bags and pre-formed slabs. Always use coco-specific base nutrients for best results.
Clay Pebbles
Expanded clay pebbles (sometimes called LECA or Hydroton) are a lightweight, reusable growing media perfect for active hydroponic systems such as flood and drain, DWC, NFT and drip systems. They're pH-neutral, drain rapidly, and support excellent root oxygenation. Clay pebbles can be cleaned and reused over multiple grows, making them one of the most economical hydroponic growing media in the long run.
Soil Mixes for Indoor Growing
Soil remains the most beginner-friendly growing medium and produces exceptional flavour and quality in the end product. Modern blended soils contain a mixture of peat, perlite and organic matter, and some are pre-charged with nutrients to see young plants through their first few weeks. For more control, choose a lighter mix like Plagron Light Mix or BioBizz Light Mix and feed from early on. For organic growing, a living soil mix takes care of most of the nutrition itself.
