Propagators
A propagator creates a warm, humid microclimate that encourages seeds to germinate and cuttings to root. Basic propagators consist of a tray and a humidity dome, ideal for getting started. Heated propagators add a warming element to the base which maintains optimal root zone temperature (22–26°C is ideal), improving germination rates and cutting success significantly. For serious propagation work, thermostatically controlled heated propagators give you full control.
Rooting Gels and Cloning Products
Rooting gel or powder is applied directly to the cut end of a cutting before it's placed into your propagation medium. It contains auxins, plant hormones that stimulate root development, and seals the cut to prevent disease. Clonex is the industry standard and trusted by growers worldwide. For faster, more aggressive root development, combine with a rooting stimulant in your first few feeds.
Propagation Growing Media
Rockwool cubes are the most popular propagation medium, as seeds and cuttings root quickly, and rockwool cubes can be transplanted directly into most growing systems without disturbing the young root system. Always soak and pH-adjust (to 5.5–6.0) before use. Jiffy pellets and foam plugs are good alternatives if you prefer a more organic option.
Propagation Nutrients and Lighting
Young plants and cuttings have different feeding requirements to mature plants, needing gentle nutrition with emphasis on root development rather than leafy growth. Propagation-specific nutrients deliver the right balance without overwhelming delicate young root systems. For lighting, a low-output LED or T5 fluorescent is ideal, as strong light close to seedlings can dry them out and gentle, consistent light is what's needed.
