How to Choose the Right Growing Medium
This range covers three broad types of growing medium, so it helps to know what you're actually buying before you add a bag to the basket.
- Lightly fed soil mixes, such as Plagron Light Mix and Tropic Light Mix, carry only a small starter charge of nutrients. They suit seedlings, young plants and growers who want full control over feeding from an early stage.
- Richer, pre-fertilised soil mixes, such as BioBizz All-Mix, Canna Terra Professional and Canna Terra Professional Plus, carry enough nutrient to feed an established plant for several weeks with little or no extra feeding. These suit beginners and organic growers who want a more forgiving, hands-off medium.
- Coco-based soils, such as Atami Coco Soil, Plagron Coco Premium and Canna Coco Professional Plus Coco Substrate, drain faster and deliver quicker growth than a soil mix, but hold very little nutrient of their own, so they need feeding with a coco-specific nutrient from early on. Gold Label 60/40 and Plagron 70/30 Growing Substrate blend coco with extra perlite for even faster drainage.
- Clay pebbles, such as Canna Aqua Clay Pebbles, are a true hydro medium with no nutrient content at all. They're used on their own in systems like flood and drain or deep water culture, or mixed into a soil or coco bag to improve drainage.

What's the difference between your organic soils and natural soils?
Organic soils are made from sustainably sourced organic matter and lean on beneficial microbes for slow-release feeding. Natural soils are blended for reliable structure and drainage with fewer additives. Both work well as a growing medium; which suits you depends on whether you want to feed little and often or let the soil do more of the work.
Do I need to feed plants grown in soil?
It depends on the mix. Lightly fed mixes such as Plagron Light Mix need feeding from early on. Richer, pre-fertilised mixes such as BioBizz All-Mix or Canna Terra Professional carry enough nutrient for several weeks before you need to start feeding.
Can I use soil alongside a hydroponic system?
Yes. Many growers run a soil or coco-based mix as the physical medium and feed it with hydroponic-style nutrient solutions, which is why we stock soil-based, coco-based and clay pebble media side by side.

A soil mix such as BioBizz All-Mix or Canna Terra Professional holds moisture and nutrient for longer and is more forgiving of missed feeds. A coco-based soil such as Atami Coco Soil or Plagron Coco Premium drains faster and grows plants more quickly, but holds very little food of its own, so it needs regular feeding with a coco nutrient.
How much soil will I need?
