Shogun Samurai Coco A and B base nutrient bottles

Quick answer: The Shogun feed chart is a week-by-week table that tells you which Shogun bottles to add to your water and how much. The printed chart covers Coco and Terra (soil) on one sheet, in millilitres per 10 litres, and runs Cuttings & Seedlings (2 weeks), Vegetative Growth (4 weeks), Flowering (8 weeks) and a final week of water only. For hydro, or if your water is very soft or very hard, use Shogun's online Feedchart Calculator instead, which adjusts the doses for your tank size and water. Start at the lower doses and work up.

Shogun is one of the ranges we sell most of in the shop, and the chart is one of the ones we get asked about most. It is more detailed than some, because Shogun build the EC targets and the water hardness into it. This guide walks through it step by step.

Where to find the official chart

Shogun publish their chart free on their own website under Downloads, as the "LED Coco and Terra Feedchart", plus a separate Autoflower version. They also have an online Feedchart Calculator where you pick Coco, Hydro or Terra, your tank size, your water type and a light, standard or heavy schedule, and it works the doses out for you. Always use the current version from Shogun rather than an old print-out, because doses do change between editions. If you are not sure you have the latest, ask us in the shop and we will check it with you.

Step 1: Pick the right chart for your growing medium

  • Coco chart: for coco coir, using Samurai Coco A & B as the base feed through the whole cycle.
  • Terra chart: for soil, using Samurai Terra Grow in veg and Samurai Terra Bloom in flower. Shogun say to apply it every watering, or every second or third watering, depending on how much food is already in your soil.
  • Hydro: there is no separate printed hydro chart. Use the online calculator and choose Hydro, with Samurai Hydro Grow A & B and Samurai Hydro Bloom A & B. Shogun's own product page gives 2 to 3ml per litre of each part. Note the Grow comes in a soft water version and the Bloom in soft or hard water versions, so check which you have.

Whichever chart you use, Shogun are clear on one thing: never mix the Grow and Bloom products in the same solution.

Step 2: Understand the columns

The chart reads left to right in four blocks.

Cuttings & Seedlings: weeks 1 to 2

Young plants and fresh cuttings. This is where Shogun Start does its work. The base feed is low or not yet used.

Vegetative Growth: weeks 1 to 4

The growing stage. Base feed steps up through these weeks. If your plants need longer in veg, or you are keeping mother plants, Shogun say to keep following the Week 4 Veg column until you are ready to flower.

Flowering Growth: weeks 1 to 8

Week 1 starts when flowers or fruit begin to form. Base feed peaks in the middle weeks and eases off towards the end, and this is where the boosters come in.

Last week

Water only. No nutrients, no boosters. This lets the plant use up what is left in the pot before harvest.

Step 3: Understand the rows

Each row is a product. Shogun's own brochure gives these working rates, and the chart tells you which weeks each one is used in.

Base feeds

  • Samurai Coco A & B, or Terra Grow and Terra Bloom: 1 to 4ml per litre, rising through veg and early flower, then dropping back. Always use equal amounts of A and B.

Roots and early growth

  • Start: 4ml per litre for cuttings and seedlings.
  • Katana Roots: 5ml per litre while roots are establishing. Shogun say to gradually reduce or stop it once the root system is established.

Through the cycle

  • Zenzym: 2.5ml per litre, used through most of the cycle to keep the root zone clean.
  • Silicon: 1ml per litre. Shogun say to pre-mix it in about 5 litres of water and adjust that to roughly pH 6.5 before adding it to the tank, because silicon on its own pushes pH up.
  • CalMag: 0 to 1ml per litre. On the Terra chart it runs most of the way through; for coco Shogun note it as a 1ml per litre root treatment for RO or soft water. If your tap water is hard you may not need it at all.

Flowering boosters

  • Sumo Active Boost: 1 to 2ml per litre through flowering weeks 1 to 8. This is the version on the chart and the one to use in active hydro or any tank you keep for more than a day.
  • Sumo Boost: the original version, for hand-watering. Shogun say it is not suitable for active hydroponic or water culture systems and should be used within 24 hours of mixing.
  • PK Warrior 9/18: 0.5 to 1ml per litre in flowering weeks 4 to 7.
  • Dragon Force: 4ml per litre, used on its own in the last 7 days before you flush. Shogun describe it as a standalone product for that final feed week, with Sumo Active Boost alongside it.
  • Geisha Foliar: ready to use, sprayed once a week on the leaves rather than added to the tank.

You do not need every bottle. Base feed plus Start or Katana Roots at the beginning and Sumo Active Boost in flower is a perfectly good Shogun schedule. Add the others as you get comfortable.

Step 4: Mix your feed and check EC and pH

The printed chart gives doses per 10 litres of water, so for a 10 litre can you use the number as printed and for 1 litre you divide by ten. The online calculator gives you ml per litre for your tank size.

  1. Fill your tank or can with water.
  2. If you use Silicon, add your pre-mixed, pH-adjusted silicon first.
  3. Add each product one at a time, stirring between each. Shogun say never to pre-mix concentrated products together; always add them to water.
  4. Check the EC. The chart has its own EC row for each week, worked out for a moderately hard tap water of EC 0.4. If you run RO water, Shogun say to add about 20% more Terra nutrient; for soft water (around EC 0.2) about 10% more; for hard water (EC 0.6 or above) about 10% less. If you grow under HPS rather than LED, reduce the EC target by 15 to 20%.
  5. Check the pH. Shogun recommend 5.5 to 6.5, using pH Down if it drifts above 6.5 and Silicon or pH Up if it drops below 5.5 late in flower. A pH and EC pen from our meters and testers range makes this easy.

Step 5: Start low and watch the plants

The chart is a guide for healthy plants under good lights. Start at the lower end of each range, especially if you are new to the range or your plants are small for their age, and move up only if they look hungry. Pale lower leaves usually mean they want more; crispy, burnt tips mean too much.

Common mistakes we see

  • Using the Terra chart for coco, or the other way round.
  • Running Terra Grow and Terra Bloom in the same tank. Switch, do not overlap.
  • Adding Silicon straight into the tank without pre-mixing and adjusting it, then wondering why the pH has jumped.
  • Using the original Sumo Boost in a recirculating system. Use Sumo Active Boost instead.
  • Carrying Dragon Force on into the flush week. It is for the final feed week, then water only.
  • Working from an old chart. Shogun do update them, so download the current one.

FAQs

Can I use the Shogun chart in hydro?

Use the online Feedchart Calculator and pick Hydro. The printed sheet only covers Coco and Terra.

My water is hard. Do I need CalMag?

Probably not, or only a little. The chart is built around EC 0.4 tap water and CalMag is listed at 0 to 1ml per litre. It is mainly for RO and soft water areas.

Do I use Sumo Boost and Sumo Active Boost together?

No, pick one. Sumo Active Boost is the one on the chart and the safer choice for most set-ups.

What if my plants flower for more than 8 weeks?

Keep feeding at the late-flower rates while the plant is still flowering or fruiting, then finish with Dragon Force for the final feed week and a week of plain water. If in doubt, bring the chart in and we will go through it.
