Quick answer: LED grow lights convert electricity into the red and blue wavelengths plants actually use for photosynthesis, running cooler and cheaper than older HPS or fluorescent setups. Match the light's draw to your tent's floor area, hang it at the right height for your growth stage, and run it on a timer, and a modern LED will take a tent from seedling to harvest on one fixture.
Why LEDs are the best choice for indoor growing
At Black Country Systems we've moved almost our entire lighting range over to LED, and for most growers it's now the sensible default over HPS or fluorescent tubes:
- Energy efficiency: LEDs turn a higher share of the electricity they draw into usable light rather than wasted heat, so running costs are lower for the same light output.
- Full spectrum output: A good LED fixture covers the blue-heavy light seedlings and vegetative plants want and the red-heavy light flowering plants want, often from the same fixture, so there is no bulb-swapping between stages.
- Low heat emission: Less heat at the canopy means less risk of light burn and an easier job for your extraction and circulation fans.
- Long lifespan: Quality LED fixtures are built to run for tens of thousands of hours with no bulb replacements.
Sizing a light to your tent
As a rough starting point, growers generally run somewhere in the region of 300-600W of quality LED draw per square metre of flowering canopy, with less needed for propagation and early vegetative growth. A compact tent (around 0.6-1.2m) typically suits a smaller fixture such as the Omega Infinity Pro 300W, while a standard 1.2m x 1.2m tent is the usual home for a 600-720W fixture such as the Maxibright Varidrive 3.0 720W or Photon 720W. Larger or multi-plant setups often step up to a split or dual-bar fixture like the Maxibright Varidrive 500W/1000W Split or Elite 500W/1000W Split for more even coverage across a bigger footprint. If you're not sure what fits your space, bring your tent dimensions in and we'll help you pick.
Choosing the right type of LED fixture
- Wattage and coverage: Higher wattage fixtures throw more usable light over a wider area, so match it to your tent, not the other way round.
- Dimmable and adjustable drivers: Ranges such as Maxibright's Varidrive let you turn output down for seedlings and clones, then right up for flowering, from a single fixture.
- Built-in vs remote driver: Fixtures with a built-in ballast (like the Omega 720W Plus or Gorilla GEN-III 720W) are simpler to hang and wire; split/remote-driver versions move the heat and weight of the driver away from the canopy.
- Under-canopy and propagation lights: Smaller fixtures such as the Maxibright MaxiLED PRO TS or Maxibright T5 LED Propagation Light fill in side and lower growth, or give cuttings a gentler start.
LED grow lights we stock
Our LED Grow Lights collection covers propagation lights through to full-size flowering fixtures, including the Maxibright Varidrive range, Omega's Infinity Pro and Black series, Elite Lighting's split fixtures, LUMii's XLED, and Gorilla's GEN-III. All are full-spectrum fixtures suitable for every stage from seedling to harvest. If you're putting together a full setup, our grow tents and fans & filters collections cover the rest of the tent.
Best practice for running your LED
- Keep the light at the height your manufacturer's guide recommends for your growth stage: typically higher for seedlings, lower for flowering, and move it up gradually as plants grow into the space.
- Run it on a timer for a consistent cycle. 18/6 is common for vegetative growth, 12/12 for flowering.
- Introduce a new, more powerful fixture gradually rather than at full output from day one, especially with young plants.
- Keep an eye on canopy temperature and leaf response (curling or bleaching at the top of the plant usually means the light needs raising).
FAQs
Can one LED fixture take a plant from seedling to harvest?
Yes, with a full-spectrum fixture. Most of our range covers propagation through to flowering from a single light, often with a dimmable driver so you can turn output down early on.
Do I need to change my fans and filters if I switch from HPS to LED?
Usually you can run a smaller extraction setup, since LEDs produce less heat at the canopy, but you'll still want proper air movement and odour control. See our guide on choosing an extractor fan and carbon filter.
Will switching to LED change my feeding?
Not fundamentally, but because LEDs run cooler, growth can be slightly more vigorous, so keep an eye on EC and adjust gradually. Our guide to reading a nutrient feed chart covers how to do that.
What size LED light do I need for my grow tent?
It depends on your tent's floor area and how much yield you're after. See the sizing section above, or see our dedicated guide on what size LED grow light for your grow tent. Bring your tent's dimensions in or message us and we'll recommend a fixture.
